February WIPocalypse Check In

I transitioned from January to February by pulling out my Moon Phases piece by The Little Stitcher.  It seemed only appropriate to work on for the lunar eclipse on January 31st.  This isn’t one of my WIPocalypse pieces, but I very much enjoyed working on it.

On the first Friday of the month, I switched to a “new” project for #offthegridfridayparty.  I decided to pick up my Anniversaries of the Heart.  I’ve been avoiding this piece since May of last year and I knew that the first thing I was going to have to do when I picked it up was rip a bunch of stuff out.  I had never been happy with the too light colors of the called for threads.  I had pulled new (darker) threads already.

I started off by ripping out the blue and restitching it and then moved onto green vine.  I had originally planned to also rip out the peach color, but once I darkened up the blue and the green, it was fine.  I was able to finish this block on the 9th.  So happy to have this one off my list.

I’ve pulled the chart for the next block but am missing a bunch of the called for threads.  I’ll have to look at that further and see if I can make some substitutions.

After finishing up the block on AOTH I pulled out my Halloween Neighborhood to give it some love.  I started and finished a new “block” on my piece.  I borrowed the tree from a pattern by Praiseworthy Stitches called Trick or Treat that was in the 2013 JCS Halloween issue.  Here’s a photo of that whole piece.

And here’s how the tree on my neighborhood turned out.

I absolutely love it.  I think it really adds to the overall spookiness of the piece.

And here’s how the whole neighborhood looks now (excuse the wrinkles).

I then moved on to working on the model for my first design.  I basically worked on this exclusively until it was finished.  I shared this black & white sneak peek on Instagram.

So, that’s how I spent my February.  I feel really good about having three finishes this month and all three were on WIPocalypse pieces.  Now, let’s see what I can get up to in March!

I am grateful for finishing my first design and moving closer to a personal goal.

2018 – Let’s Do This

This will be my third year of working on whittling down my WIPs.  In 2016 I drew names of projects and then worked on each until finished (completed WIPs = 1) and in 2017 I joined the Year of WIPs Challenge and chose 12 WIPs to focus on over the year (completed WIPs = 3).  This year I thought I would join the WIPocalypse.  I actually participated in WIPocalypse years ago and was pleasantly surprised when I heard it was still going strong.  So, I spent some time at the end of December deciding which WIPs I wanted to focus on for 2018 (I talked about them in my last Flosstube video of the year).  So, here they are!

Anniversaries of the Heart by Blackbird Designs

This is the whole piece currently.  I am working on the 9th (September) block, Clara Ellen.  I set this aside because some of the thread colors on this block are way too light and need to be ripped out and restitched in a darker shade.

Halloween Neighborhood

This piece was a round robin originally, but last year I pulled it out and started adding some additional blocks to it.  My plan for 2018 is to work on this for #dark13stitching every month on the 13th and to start filling in some of the gaps.  I started charting the whole thing out so I can do some planning.  Here are the blocks I added last year.  The first one was By the Light of the Moon – a freebie from The Primitive Needle with a few alterations.

Halloween Rules by Milady’s Needle.  I changed up the configuration on this one too.  The tombstone on the left says 2007, the year I started this RR.  I’ll put the year it’s finished on the other tombstone.  The one at the bottom says E.A. Poe 1849.

This is a portion of a class piece from Brightneedle called Ghoulies and Ghosties.  I just can’t get over that witch hat roof.

And finally, I’m in the process of working on what was originally my block at the start of the RR (having to restitch because my first RR was lost).  This is the cemetery from Village of Hawk Run Hollow by Carriage House Samplings.  I flipped the design so that the tree is on the right hand side and I’ll be eliminating the black background that is on the original piece.

Green Santa by Birds of a Feather

This poor Santa has been a WIP for a ridiculous amount of time.  I picked him back up in November to work on for Santa Sundays #santasundayxs on Instagram.  I decided to keep him as a focus piece so that I can hopefully complete him and then move onto one of the other BOAF Santas.

Vierlande Winders’ Keeper by Amy Mitten

This piece is one of my challenge pieces.  While the stitching itself shouldn’t be challenging, the finishing will for sure.  I started this the year my dad died and haven’t had the heart to pick it back up since then.

His Eye is on the Sparrow by Heartstring Samplery

Sparrow wasn’t on my radar at all until two things happened – I saw that Tracy P had just purchased this and was planning to make it a 2018 piece.  I got it out to share a photo of mine and remembered how much I love it.  And the second thing was that I’ve been binge-watching Nicole’s videos and am missing my sampler stitching dreadfully.  I’m stitching this on 48 count Gander linen with the called for threads.

Mystery 9 (Le Potager du Roi/The King’s Vegetable Garden) – Chatelaine Designs

I had hoped to have M9 done in 2017, but alas that didn’t happen.  I have LOTS more to say about this piece, but for the purposes of this post I have completely finished (minus crystals and bugle beads) the top left corner including the beading.  Next I’m moving over to the top right corner.

Here’s how the whole thing looks currently.

Model for Cozyegg Designs

In 2018 I hope to finish the model and release my first design – with more to come!

Dutch Beauty by Permin of Copenhagen

Emily and I decided to start Dutch Beauty together in June of 2017 as kind of a last Maynia start.  I’m doing my own color conversion with a mix of silks, overdyed cotton, and DMC.  Started at the right bottom corner a la Nicole.

I’m so in love with this piece and can’t wait to spend more time with it in 2018.  I’m currently working on that big vase of lilies.

And finally, my New Year’s Day re-start.

Ten by Amy Mitten

This was a class I took back in 2010 at the Tudor Rose Sampler Guild.  Amy designed this piece for our 10th anniversary.  It has been sitting since then with a very small amount stitched because I wanted to tea dye it after seeing Amy’s model.  So, the last week of December I ripped out that stitching and tea dyed my fabric and then started it again on New Year’s Day.  The reason I chose to make this a focus piece this year is because of all the specialty stitches and because it intimidates me A LOT.  So, this is my second challenge piece for 2018.

This is where I’m at after working on it almost a week.  And below are the detached buttonhole petals that will get attached to the flower to give it dimension.

So there you have it, my focus WIPs for 2018.  As I finish these off (because I’m being optimistic), I may rotate other WIPs into my rotation.

I am grateful for a brand new year.

Over Halfway

I had intended to do a check-in post at the end of June on my progress on my Year of WIPs challenge, but…well…ok so it’s August.  If you’ve been following along on Instagram or on Flosstube, you’ve seen the ongoing progress, but I thought it would be nice to do a little recap.

Above is the mosaic of each of my Year of WIPs pieces where they were at the beginning of the year.  Every one of these pieces got some attention during Stitch Maynia also.  And so here’s my current progress.

Mermaid Treasure Box by Chatelaine Designs – silks and Petite Treasure Braid on 32ct White Zweigart – started 9/26/2005.  I got some work in on that top left corner.

And a little more…

Mystery IX (Le Potager du Roi) by Chatelaine Designs – silks and Petite Treasure Braid on 32ct Lavender Mist Zweigart – started 1/1/2006.  I’ve been working on this one a good bit.  I started off by finishing the beading on the swirls in the corner.  After beading that whole corner, I decided that I would go ahead and start on the next section instead of continuing on with the beading.  I did outgrow my q-snap though, so M9 got moved to scroll rods.

A little closer look at the corner with more done on the next section.

The start of filling in the Algerian eyelets and the corner pool.

And I just recently finished that corner pool – all the Petite Treasure Braid and the beads are done. So sparkly!

My plan is to continue on with M9, to give it as much attention as I can over the next few months.

Bay Sampler by The Workbasket – SNC on 28ct Sterling PTP – started 6/18/2006.  My first order of business on Bay Sampler was to rip out that big sail and restitch it for the third (and final) time.

Then I was able to move to some of the other fun little motifs. Little fish…

Whales…

And the start of a purple mermaid’s tail…

Mystery Sampler by Papillon Creations from The Gift of Stitching magazine – Vikki Clayton HDF on 32ct Sandcastle by Silkweaver – started 3/23/07.  This one is FINISHED!  I will do a separate post on it soon, but here is a final shot!

Mermaids of the Deep Blue by Mirabilia – DMC on 32ct Ocean Waves by Stitches and Spice – started 1/1/2008.  I was able to get a good start on the second mermaid in the two days I worked on this during Maynia.

Le Cuisine d’Ete by Echevette – DMC on 32ct Lemon Zest by Silkweaver – started 2/19/2008.  This one got a lot of love too.

Worked on getting the center section stitched…

And I loved this little lacy part on the side.  And I finished the bottom right hand block too.  I think I could finish this one up quickly, if I stuck with it.

Le Marquoir de Justine by Anne Pelletier Pauleau – my own conversion to Gloriana, Soie Crystal, and AVAS on 40ct HDF light coffee antiqued with walnut spray – started 2/4/14.  I was happy to visit this one again.

Primitive Wizard of Oz by Midsummer Night Designs – DMC, Classic Colorworks, and Petite Treasure Braid on 40ct Tissage Gander – started 11/19/2004.  I think I could finish this one pretty quickly too.

Colonial Garden by Plum Street Samplers – NPI on 40ct Black Forest by Lakeside – started 1/9/15.  I am having a really hard time with this one, and because it’s difficult, I’m really not wanting to work on it much.  Or at all.

Six Wives of Henry VIII by Primitive Hare – DMC on 40ct Gander linen coffee-dyed – started 7/25/16.  I made some more progress on Anne Boleyn.

Village of Hawk Run Hollow by Carriage House Samplings – DMC on 36ct Lakeside Light Examplar – started 9/1/16 – one of twelve blocks done.  Worked some more on block 12.

Anniversaries of the Heart by Blackbird Designs – Classic Colorworks and GAST on 40ct Vintage Examplar – started 6/13/10 – eight of fourteen blocks done.  I did manage to get some stitches in on it.  Unfortunately, I think a good portion of those stitches are coming back out.  I am so disappointed in some of the threads for this block – they are just so light they blend into the fabric.  All that work, for nothing.  So, I will rip out and restitch with a shade darker thread.  Eventually.

So, that’s my (close to) half-year check in on my YOW pieces.  I hope to focus on those two that I think are close to a finish and then continue to focus on M9 until it’s done.

Above all though, I’m really glad that all of these pieces have gotten some attention.  And even if they don’t all get done this year, they are at least a little closer.

I am grateful for great progress and falling back in love with my pieces.
