SALs:

  • Join Emily (eclecticpossessions) and I on Instagram for #dark13stitching where we stitch on something dark and creepy on the 13th of every month and you can also join us for #darkoctoberstitching during the whole month of October.

Show notes:

Finishes:

  1. Block 1 of Village of Hawk Run Hollow by Carriage House Samplings (also listed under WIPs).  I made two changes – I stitched the background of the letter in tent stitch over one and I changed the stream color to NPI 152.  The DMC/NPI 155A was just too green for me, so I went a shade bluer.
  2. Wicked by the Primitive Needle – stitched one over one on 30ct Antique Cotton by R&R with the called for Belle Soie silks.  My second time stitching this, you can see the first one here.
  3. Heart Tree by JBW Designs – stitched on unknown fabric (but probably a 28ct ivory Wichelt) with Weeks Bullfrog and Garnet.  There is a brass heart charm that goes at the top that will be added later

Framing:

  1. A Little Bitty Ark by Homespun Elegance – stitched with DMC on 28ct linen and finished in 2001.  I’ve never shown this piece on my blog before, so I’ve added a photo of it below before framing.
  2. Rampant Cats by Barbara Ana
  3. Quaker Garden by Blackbird Designs – stitched with Weeks and GAST on 30ct Garden State Java by R&R and finished in 2006

Flosstube Episode 16: Comfort Stitching

Thank you so much for tuning in to the Cozyegg flosstube/podcast!  In this episode I share my contribution to Quilts for Peace, a few little finishes, some birthday stash enhancement, and progress on my WIPs.

Show notes:

Finishes:

  1. Sewed the binding on a Quilts for Peace quilt (not my quilt, I only did the binding)
  2. Perching from the Blackbird Designs’ Mary Ann Blackburn booklet (Loose Feathers Spring 2012) – on 36ct Lakeside Linens Vintage Meadow Rue with the called for Classic Colorworks and GAST threads with one exception – I substituted the two leaves charted in GAST Toasted Barley with a brighter green DMC.  Finished into a pincushion filled with crushed walnut shells as a coordinating piece to go with the Spring’s Song box (also in the same booklet) shared in this post.
  3. Honeysuckle Vine Stocking from the Blackbird Designs’ Glorious June booklet – on 40ct Picture This Plus Dill with the called for Classic Colorworks threads and the DMC substitute for Weeks Honeysuckle.
  4. WIP Minders – I shared mine made from Cotton + Steel August fabrics, but I also made two more out of Kaffe Fassett fabrics.  I used this tutorial to make them but used sew on snaps instead of the KAM snaps.  If I had to do it again, I would use the KAM.

WIPs:

  1. Six Wives of Henry VIII by Primitive Hare – stitching on 40ct Gander linen I coffee-dyed myself with the called for DMC.  Begun and being stitched while we watch The Tudors on TV.
  2. Anniversaries of the Heart by Blackbird Designs – I’m currently on the July block called Swan Lake; stitched on 40ct Vintage Examplar by Lakeside Linens with the called for GAST and Crescent Colors threads
  3. Black’d Skie by Primitive Needle – 40ct Vintage Pear by Lakeside Linen and the called for Pure Palette baroque silks and SNC silks

Stash Enhancement:

  1. Butterfly Quilt pattern by Tula Pink
  2. Project Roll (similar) – made with Ghastlies fabric by Sylvia
  3. Rampant Cats Sampler by Barbara Ana Designs stitched on 40ct Lakeside Linens Cedar Plank by Sylvia

I apologize for the emotional tangent I go off on in the video.  I briefly considered re-recording, but there was a lot of good stuff I hated to lose.  Thanks for hanging in there when I’m a hot mess.

Spring’s Song

IMG_3786

I had one final finish in 2012 that I’m finally able to share.  I stitched this little piece up for a dear friend’s birthday (which I am notoriously and repeatedly late for).  She spent the majority of her year last year stitching for other people, and I wanted to do something special that was just for her.

IMG_3780
This is Spring’s Song by Blackbird Designs from the Spring 2012 Loose Feathers booklet, Mary Ann Blackburn.  I stitched it with the called for threads and linen (Crescent Colours and GAST on 30ct Sheep’s Straw).
IMG_3788
Part of what I loved about this piece was the jewelry box it is mounted in.  I found the called for box at Hobby Lobby and painted and Briwaxed my little heart out.
IMG_3777

And I really thought this might be a perfect little sewing box, a place to keep her scissors and threads.  It has a mirror inside the lid, and little removable trays to hold little odds and ends.
IMG_3778

I love the way it turned out and the finishing instructions were very easy to follow for mounting the piece in the lid.  Another sweet friend lent me her Briwax so that I could get the box finished, when my hunt for a local source to obtain the stuff turned up empty.  But thanks to online resources, I’m now the proud owner of more Briwax than you can shake a stick at.  I suppose there will be a lot more box painting in my future!
IMG_3782

I’m always nervous about mailing things off, and I hold my breath until I know they’ve arrived safely.  But I wrapped this baby up in about a thousand layers of bubble wrap and sent it on its way.  I’m so pleased that even a very late birthday gift still brightened her day and let her know how much I treasure her friendship.
Happy Thanksgiving Christmas New Year’s Valentine’s Day Birthday, my sweet friend.
I am grateful for hints of Spring.

2011 Finishes

Can you believe another year has come and gone? I thought I’d squeak in a final post for the year and do a little recap of 2011. Above you can see my finishes for 2011. A couple of quilts, some beading, some finishing, and a few medium-sized pieces.

They are (from left to right):

Camille’s French Sampler, Holly Wool Biscornu, Snow Garden, Be Mine
Indulgence, 2000 Years Ago, Joyful Night, Valentine Rose
Dash Away All, a beaded fob, Day of the Dead earrings, Sweet Treats Block 1 and Border
Stars & Stripes, Honfleur Sampler, Angel of Tulips, Garden of Eerie
Penny Angel, Mele Kalikimaka, Hand & Heart, Joy

I linked each of those to the associated blog post so you can get more info on them if you want. I’m pleased with my finishes for the year, although I’d hoped to have more. But, isn’t that the way it always is?

As for the books I read this year, here’s my little list for that as well…

City of Bones
The Forgery of Venus*
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet*
Parrot & Olivier in America*
Lover Mine
A Northern Light
The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels
The Hare with Amber Eyes*
Living Dead in Dallas
Heaven is for Real
The Help
Lover Unleashed
An Object of Beauty*
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Club Dead
Soulless
The Paris Wife*
The books with asterisks are book club books.

And I thought I’d share with you a look at my ort jar. I’ve been letting these bits pile up for awhile (much longer than just the past year – they are packed in there really well), and decided that tomorrow will be a fresh new start across the board.

IMG_2119

After my stitching today, I’ll empty this out and begin anew on January 1.

IMG_2120

I’d really like to also finish Margaret Cottam, but that may not happen before the ball drops at midnight. I would love to see another “1” on that corner though!

IMG_2122

And tomorrow, I will have a new start, as part of my New Year’s Day tradition. I can’t wait!

IMG_2125

Happy New Year!

I am grateful for new beginnings.
